Wax On, Wax Off: Best #1 Principle by Mr. Miyagi

Wax On Wax Off

Learning a new skill is always exciting, but it can also be intimidating. At Latin Bootcamp, we understand that learning salsa and bachata can seem daunting, especially for beginners. That’s why we’ve adopted the wax on, wax off principle of Mr. Miyagi from The Karate Kid to help our students master the basics of these Latin dances.

The Wax On, Wax Off Principle for Cuban Salsa or Dominican Bachata

In the Karate Kid, Mr. Miyagi teaches Daniel the movements needed for karate by having him perform seemingly unrelated tasks, such as waxing his car and painting his fence. However, these tasks help Daniel develop the muscle memory and coordination needed to perform karate moves.

Similarly, at LatinBootcamp, we emphasize the importance of mastering the basics of cuban salsa and domincan bachata before moving on to more advanced techniques. We believe that just like Mr. Miyagi’s wax on, wax off technique, practicing the basics of these dances can help students become better, more confident dancers.

Mr. Miyagi teaches his student, Daniel, the ‘Wax On, Wax Off’ principles in the 1984 movie, “The Karate Kid”.

Mastering the Basics of Cuban Salsa or Dominican Bachata

At Latin Bootcamp, we start our salsa and bachata bootcamps with the basics. We teach our students the proper footwork, timing, and coordination needed to execute the basic steps. We then have them practice these steps repeatedly until they become second nature.

Our instructors guide our students through each step, just like Mr. Miyagi guided Daniel. They emphasize the importance of proper technique and form, and they help our students develop the muscle memory and coordination needed to perform more complex dance moves.

The Benefits of Practicing the Basics

There are numerous benefits to mastering the basics of salsa and bachata. By practicing the basic steps, students can improve their balance, coordination, and posture. They can also develop their muscle memory and coordination, making it easier to perform more complex dance moves. In addition to physical benefits, mastering the basics can also improve students’ mental health. By practicing the basics, students can reduce stress levels, improve self-confidence, and boost their mood. They can also develop a deeper appreciation for the art of dance, which can help them connect with others and improve their social skills.

At LatinBootcamp, we firmly believe in the mantra of ‘practice makes perfect’. There’s absolutely no shame in staying in the same level and perfecting the basics before progressing to a more advanced level. In fact, we encourage it!

Every Salsa or Bachata Bootcamp is never really the same

Our coaches at Latin Bootcamp structure the bootcamps in such a way that each session, even at the same level, offers something new and different. Depending on the overall skill level of the class, they like to add a sprinkle of variation to keep things fresh and exciting.

So, whether it’s your second, third, or even fourth time attending the basic bootcamp, remember that each time is a unique opportunity to refine your skills, learn something new, and build a solid foundation. After all, a strong foundation is key to mastering more advanced techniques in salsa and bachata. Embrace the journey of learning, and enjoy the dance!

After attending a few basic salsa or bachata bootcamps and you feel like you’ve truly mastered the basics, you can then progress to the ‘plus’ bootcamps. These sessions are designed to take your skills to the next level by introducing you to more complex techniques and routines. Remember, though, the basics are the building blocks to advanced moves, and understanding them thoroughly will greatly enhance your overall dancing experience.

So, let’s recap, just like we do at our bootcamps

At Latin Bootcamp, we believe in the wax on, wax off principles of Mr. Miyagi from the Karate Kid. We emphasize the importance of mastering the basics of salsa and bachata before moving on to more advanced techniques. By practicing the basics repeatedly, our students can develop the muscle memory and coordination needed to become better dancers.

If you’re thinking about taking a Salsa or Bachata Bootcamp, consider LatinBootcamp.nl. Every weekend we organize 3-hour workshops in the center of Rotterdam. Our coaches are dedicated to helping our students master the basics of these dances. We believe that by following the wax on, wax off principle of Mr. Miyagi, our students can become confident, skilled dancers and enjoy the many physical and mental health benefits that come with these Latin dances. When you feel like you have mastered the basics you can go to the Plus Salsa or Bachata Bootcamps

Mirrors: 3 Reasons We Absolutely Don’t Like Them

Dancing without mirrors may seem challenging, but it can be beneficial to your development as a dancer. In this blog post, we will discuss the reasons why mirrors are not always our friend at Latin Bootcamp when it comes to improving the salsa and bachata dancing skills of our students.

1. The Importance of Connection and the Role of Mirrors

One of the primary reasons we consciously avoid mirrors while dancing is because they can distract us from our dance partners. If we focus too much on our reflections, we might miss the chance to create a stronger bond with our partner. This bond is usually built through eye contact and touch. Dancing is essentially about social interaction and maintaining a strong connection with your partner. Mirrors can interrupt this connection, causing unnecessary interruptions. That’s why none of our locations, including our new home at The Social Hub Rotterdam, have mirrors.

2. The Pitfall of Overthinking Salsa and Bachata

Mirrors in a dance setting can often lead us to overthink our dance moves. When we see ourselves reflected, we might start focusing too much on every little detail of our dance performance. This level of scrutiny isn’t always beneficial. In fact, it can contribute to feelings of self-consciousness and may lead us to overanalyze every move we make. This overanalysis can quickly turn into anxiety and self-doubt. These negative feelings can hinder our progress in learning new dance moves or perfecting ones we already know. Furthermore, they can also take away from the joy and pleasure of dancing.

However, when mirrors are taken out of the equation, we are able to shift our attention from how our dance looks to how it feels. This shift allows us to focus on the inherent feeling of the dance, encouraging our bodies to move in a more intuitive and natural way. We can let go of the external and often critical eye, and instead, immerse ourselves in the rhythm and flow of the dance. We can focus on the music, our partner, and the movements themselves, rather than how those movements look. This can lead to a more authentic and enjoyable dance experience.

3. The Distraction of Comparison

Lastly, mirrors can serve as a significant source of distraction during a salsa or bachata bootcamp. They not only divert our attention away from our partner, but they can also foster a competitive, and therefore stressful, environment. When we observe others dancing in the mirror, it becomes all too easy to slip into a comparison trap, measuring ourselves against them, which can be disheartening and discouraging. Without the presence of mirrors, we are free to concentrate on our personal progress and take pleasure in the dance without any external distractions.

No Mirrors at The Social Hub Library
Our New Home, The Library of The Social Hub Rotterdam

In summary, there are numerous compelling reasons why we advocate for a reduced reliance on mirrors during a salsa or bachata BootCamp at Latin Bootcamp. Mirrors can inadvertently erode the connection between partners, encourage overthinking and excessive self-critique, and serve as a distracting element in a learning environment. Opting to dance without mirrors can allow us to focus more intently on the intrinsic feeling of the dance and foster a meaningful connection with our partner on a deeper, more emotional level. So, the next time you find yourself at a salsa or bachata bootcamp, try embracing the challenge of dancing without mirrors. You might be surprised at the impact it can have on both your technical skills and your overall enjoyment of the experience.

Exciting Move to The Social Hub Rotterdam in 2024 – Our Journey Continues!

Say hello to our new home The Social Hub in Rotterdam. Since our founding in 2019, Latin Bootcamp has been on an exciting journey. We first began at Cafe Engels at Rotterdam Central Station. Then, in May of the same year, we relocated to the Westelijk Handelsterrein. This move allowed us to solidify our values in our very own space and marked the birth of Avenue Nine. Unfortunately, our Latin Bootcamp quick progress paused in early 2020 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

In May 2023, after a three-year hiatus, we resumed operations, infusing Latin Bootcamp with the rhythm and energy it’s known for. Despite the challenges, we remained resilient. However, a change was imminent. The planned transformation of the Westelijk Handelsterrein into a hotel meant another move.

As we move into 2024, we’re delighted to announce our relocation to The Social Hub in Rotterdam, a vibrant space that aligns with our values. This move marks a new chapter in our journey, epitomizing inclusivity and community spirit. The Social Hub welcomes everyone, regardless of age or gender, making it an ideal venue for our salsa and bachata bootcamps.

Beverages and Social Events

The Social Hub is not merely a venue for conducting lessons and bootcamps. It’s a multifunctional space designed to foster creativity, learning, and most importantly, community. One of its prime attractions is the wonderful bar situated within the premises. This bar is well-stocked with a wide range of beverages to cater to all tastes and preferences. It offers warm, comforting drinks such as coffee and tea. If you prefer something cooler, there’s an assortment of cold drinks like Fris, beer, and a variety of refreshing cocktails. Beyond drinks, the bar also offers an array of snacks and sandwiches to satiate your hunger. With such a versatile and welcoming space, it’s no surprise that we are brimming with excitement and can’t wait to start hosting social events at our new location. We have several events in the pipeline, designed to leverage the potential of this unique space to foster networking, learning, and most important fun. So, keep an eye out for updates and get ready to be a part of a vibrant and dynamic community!

Language and Accessibility

Our new location will enhance the diversity of our Latin Bootcamp groups.
